Like every girl back in 2010, I was so obsessed with Drake and couldn’t wait until Thank Me Later came out. MTV premiered this special about Drake called “Better Than Good Enough”. I made sure I sat down and watched it the minute it aired. Of course, I feel in love with what Drake was saying and it also made me fall in love with his best friend and amazing producer Noah “40” Shebib.
There were various scenes of Drake recording songs from TML but one song really stuck out to me. It was called “Light Up”, the beat is what got me first. Produced by 40, the piano introduction that led to the hard beat that followed. Second, Drake words dropped on the track (“Don’t get impatient when it takes too long / Drink it all even it tastes too strong / I gotta feel alive even when it kills me / Promise to always give you me, the real me”). The song was about hustling no matter; when people try to bring the bullshit, keep going cause at the end of the day, what you’re doing is a reflection back to you. And lastly, Jay-Z. Hov himself came and brought the song from about a 7 to a 10. Even Drake said that “Jay comes on the second verse and puts me in my place”. Jay has his bars, you know the usual. But the one that sticks out to me the most is “And to these niggas I’m like Windows 7, you let em tell it they swear that they invented you.” Oh yes, that’s a bar. And yes, I’ve used that as an Instagram captions.
So listen & enjoy!
