It’s been a while since I’ve put you all on to some music I have decided to bless you all with my top 10 songs for this week. Since the last time I’ve posted I have been exposed to sooooo much good music so I am going to start sharing it with you all!
1. “Bounce” by Logic
After being exposed to “I’m Gone” on a Spotify commercial and after iTunes named “Under Pressure” the best Rap album of 2014, I decided to check Logic out. Little did I know I was going to fall in love with his music. Biracial (white mother and black mother), Logic’s appearance and his positive attitude may initially have you thinking he’s just another wack white rapper. But the moment you hear his lyrics, you instantly go ‘THIS BOY IS DOPE”. Logic raps about REAL LIFE SHIT and he does it so eloquently. The whole Under Pressure album is a gem but Bounce is my turn up song. I listen to this song every day and when I do, it instantly just gets my hype. Listen to this early in the morning and you are bound to have a good day.
2. “St. Tropez” by J. Cole
I am like the ultimate J. Cole fan. I’ve seen him in concert twice now and I have every one of his albums. From bomb mixtapes and bomb features, J. Cole has grown a special place in my heart. He also attended the same college I go to so it’s starting to say that things are getting serious between us. The announcement for his latest album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, came out and I got so excited. I was praying that this would be the first time that his album DIDN’T leak but my wish didn’t come true. Every song on this album serves life but one of my favorites is St. Tropez. It isn’t the best song on the album but it’s one of the most musically brilliant on the whole album. If the beat gets me, then the song has me. Everytime I listen to this song, I always say “if I smoked weed, this song would sound so amazing.” Blaze on, my friends.
3. “7/11” by Beyonce
BAEYONCE! I love 7/11, like literally every time this song comes on in the car, I hit my ratchet booty twerk right in the front seat. I bs the lyrics the majority of the time cause honestly I have no idea what’s she saying half the time. This song is FUN! I haven’t been to a party yet since this song has come out but trust the first time I hear this out in the club, I am going to lose it. The video itself gave me life, even had me in kitchen “not dropping that alcohol”. She looked amazing (like she always does) in this video. I plan on creating my own version of this video after one of the fun college drunk nights. This is one of those classic songs you listen to while you get ready to take on the weekend. Thanks Bey for my new college night anthem.
4. “Feel Right” by Mark Ronson featuring Mystikal
I have been a big fan of Mark Ronson for the longest of time. All the way back to his “Ooh Wee” days, I find his music to be so cool because it is truly just good music. I have a weird obsession with British Pop, where Mark Ronson is the king of it where his credits include the success of the late Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and others. His classic covers of songs create a whole new soulful sound that the world needed. Following the success of his latest track “Uptown Funk”, Mark debuted a new song on his performance on Saturday Night Live. This song screams soul and Mystikal lyrics made the song just magic. It has its James Brown feel to it and it makes you wanna get up and hit your two step. I can instantly see this song being a part of a Quentin Tarantino montage. The song has got spunk.
5. “Feeling Myself” by Nicki Minaj featuring Beyonce
Pretty on Fleek. When “The Pinkprint” first came out, I wasn’t trying to give it a chance. The first few songs on the album were her being all whiney and I am not the biggest fan of her singing voice. I immediately jumped to Feeling Myself because I saw that the Queen Beyonce was in it. The was one of my first favorites from the album. For one, this beat is INSANE. Produced by Hit Boy, the beat gives Nicki the room to come on and bless us with Hood Nicki ( which I am always here for). Secondly, Beyonce little bar that she dropped had us all screaming ‘YAAAS SAY THAT BEY”. “Changed the game with the digital drop/Male or Female, it’s make no difference I stop the world/” Only she can end a sentence by saying “Carry On”.
6. “Jealous” by Nick Jonas.
I have fallen victim to becoming a Nick Jonas fan. I’ll admit it, he was not my favorite Jonas brother (Joe was bae back in the day). But his transformation into sexiness has made a believer out of me. One day in the dining hall I heard his other single “Chains” and I was like “ok Nick Jonas look at you with the R&B”. I found Jealous and let it sit in my Spotify playlist for the longest of time before I was exposed to its greatness. From the music to the way he sings it makes me such a huge fan of his! The remix with Tinashe messes up the song for him. The original is amazing, so just listen to that one.
7. “Not For Long” by B.o.B. featuring Trey Songz
I have such a sweet spot for B.o.B. I think he is so cute and his accent just adds to that. I have always been a fan of his work, his music never disappoints. While I back home, WDKX played this song a lot. It’s so cute to me, just the way that B.o.B. raps in this song is very cute. And add the beautiful vocals of Trey Songz. Bound to be amazing.
8. “Only One” by Kanye West featuring Paul McCartney
Kanye can do no wrong in my eyes. So when this song dropped on NYE, I was looking for every reason I could start listening to this while I was in church. Anytime Kanye talks about his mother in a song it gets me. I am still kind of confused on who is speaking to who in this song but I think its so beautiful. Kanye’s soft spots are his mother and his daugther, I love that he is keeping his mother’s spirit alive with this song.
